  • Ensure the oil temperature remains consistent at 350°F (175°C) throughout the frying process.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan while frying, as this can lower the oil temperature and result in greasy doughnuts.
  • If you prefer baked doughnuts, you can use a doughnut pan and bake the doughnuts at 375°F (190°C) for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Feel free to experiment with different varieties of apple juice to find your favourite

Serving Suggestions

Perfect with a cup of coffee or tea, a refreshing glass of your favourite Duskin apple juice, or on their own. They also make a delightful addition to any gathering or celebration.

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, rub the butter or margarine into the flour. Rub in the fresh yeast or stir in the dried yeast.  Stir in the sugar and salt.
  • Pour the Duskin Apple Juice into the dry ingredients and mix to a soft dough. Beat well until smooth.  Cover with a damp tea-towel and leave in a warm place until doubled in size.

Step 2: Shape the Doughnuts

  • Lightly flour a clean work surface and turn the dough out onto it. Knead gently for a few minutes.
  • Divide the dough into 10 to 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
  • Optional – you can flatten each ball of dough and make a hole in the centre to make ring doughnuts, they will fry faster.

Step 3: Fry the Doughnuts

  • Heat the vegetable oil in your deep fat fryer to 350°F (175°C) taking care to follow the manufacturers instructions.
  • Carefully add a few doughnuts to the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 5 – 10 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through, turning the doughnuts over at least once. Do not leave the fryer unattended and be very careful with hot oil.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the doughnuts from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Repeat with the remaining doughnuts.

Step 4: Dust with Sugar

  • While the doughnuts are still warm, dust them generously with Icing or Caster sugar, mix in a little ground cinnamon if liked.
  • For an extra touch, you can also drizzle some additional apple juice over the doughnuts before dusting with sugar. This enhances the apple flavour and adds a touch of sweetness.
  • If you have made any Apple Jam or Duskin Apple Juice Jelly you can make a hole in the side of your doughnuts and use a piping bag to fill them with jam.
  • Allow the doughnuts to cool slightly before serving.
